Dear Church Family,
May the Blessings of God be with you. We are about to begin another journey of the Christian year, the season of Lent. This is a season of self-reflection and preparation. Lent finds some of its roots in a very early tradition of preparing new converts for baptism.
This time of preparation included fasting Monday thru Saturday all food from daylight to dark and being taught the meaning and practice of being a faithful disciple of Jesus. This practice included study of scripture and the discipline of prayer. You may want to make a commitment to some of these disciplines during the season of lent in 2018 which begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14.
We will launch our Lenten journey with the opportunity to receive the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion with a personal experience in the sanctuary from 6-9 am Ash Wednesday morning. I will be there to serve you when you are ready and there will be guides printed for your personal experience with God. Also, there will be a worship service at Browning Masonic in Harmony Hall at 1:00 pm for everyone who would like to experience Ash Wednesday in worship.
Our Lenten experience will continue with a sermon series based upon God's commands to Love. These commands include to love our neighbors, love one another and to love God. Think of our love of God and those around us this way: could we love as Jesus did that while hanging on the cross? Could we look out at those who cried out "crucify him" and those who drove the nails into his hands and feet and then look to heaven and say, "Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing."
Lent is one of those seasons in which God will often ask of us to serve in a way that we may prefer not to. Just as Jesus human preference was not to go to the cross. Yet, Jesus set for us the ultimate example of following God's will when he declared, "not my will but yours be done." No matter our reasons, are we willing to love God as Jesus did and declare as Jesus did, "not my will, desire, or preference but, whatever you ask God, I will do."
