APRIL 2018 MISSION FOCUS – Food for Thought

Every month, Food for Thought mobile pantries provide food assistance at multiple partner sites throughout greater Toledo.  We help people who face the realities of food insecurity, offering a choice of nutritious meal options, including shelf-stable items and fresh produce.  Maintaining our patron’s dignity – and serving them thoughtfully – is our utmost priority.  Every Friday night, volunteers meet to make sandwiches and pack lunches for distribution on Saturday to people throughout the downtown Toledo area.  We provide food, water or coffee, as well as conversation for the people we meet.  15,600 lunches were made in 2016!  Our Sunday School will be doing a special project for Food for Thought during the month of April.  Whatever is collected from our Mission Jar this month will be combined with the children’s efforts to support the mission of Food for Thought.

Operation Christmas Child

We are gathering OCC monthly donations for a packing party again this year when collection week rolls around in 2018.  This past November, we packed 67 shoeboxes to add our totals with this packing party!

They deserve new items to open and cherish.

We are in need of a volunteer to oversee the Fellowship Ministry.  This is an important time when we visit with guests, members, friends and family; share our concerns or a story over a cup of coffee, before we continue with our week.  This person would make sure there is food available and  make sure there are people signed up to make coffee, set out the treats, and clean up.  Maybe consider sharing this responsibility with a friend.  Please contact the Church office at 419-878-3645, if you are interested in serving in this ministry.

  Lenten Sermon Series

Everyone wants to know that they are loved unconditionally. During Lent this year, our sermon series is going to focus on God’s love for us and how God desires us to show that same love to one another. The church, the body of Christ in which we are all apart in Christ, is the instrument of God’s love in our world. Let us learn together the rich blessings God has in store for us and all those that we love with God’s love.

Egg-citing News:

Join us for an Easter egg hunt this Sunday following church.  Children up to 6th grade are welcome to participate in this egg-citing event and adults are encouraged to “egg” them on!  All egg hunters will be awarded a sackful of goodies.  Please bring your own basket (we will have some bags on hand too).  Ages 4 and under will be in the courtyard; ages 5 to 2nd grade in the front of the church; 3rd to 6th grade on the side of the church.

Next Thursday, March 29 at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall - Maundy Thursday Potluck Dinner and Holy Communion with special music from the choir.

Good Friday Cross Walk

Friday, March 30 please meet at 11:45 am in the back parking lot of Waterville UMC, 102 North Fifth Street.  This year’s walk will include 14 prayer stops, including 3 at the WUMC.  For those who desire to travel the entire distance, it will be a total of 2.5 miles.  There will be several locations that people can stop and then rejoin the group if the distant is too great.  The cross we will carry is heavy for some. There is no reason two, three or even four people cannot help one another carry the cross. By the time Jesus was to carry the cross he was so weak he could not carry it either and needed help.  We too need help to daily pick up our cross and follow Jesus.  Let’s us gather to witness in our community the great gift of Grace God gave the world in the life, death and resurrection of God’s Son and our Savior.

April 1 - 7:00 am  Sunrise Service at Farnsworth Park – River Rd at Roche de Bout Shelter.  Breakfast Following at Zion Lutheran Church

10:30 am Easter Worship Celebration at WUMC

Easter Lily Orders - Please help to beautify the altar for Easter by ordering a lily in honor of someone or in memory of a loved one never forgotten.  Envelopes for Easter Lily orders have been placed in each pew and in each attendance booklet. Please use them to place your order.  The cost is $8.00.  Please complete the number of flowers and to whom you are dedicating to.  Place your envelope and money in the offering or drop it off at the church office.  There are 8 lilies left and the last day to order is this Sunday, March 25.

MARCH 2018 MISSION FOCUS – UMCOR Administrative Costs – this Sunday is Mission Jar Sunday!

March’s Mission Focus will be to support the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s operating budget by donating to the One Great Hour of Sharing Campaign.  None of the funds they collect for other mission projects through this agency (school kits, health kits, disaster response efforts, etc.) covers any of their operational costs, so 100% of the gifts they receive for mission projects goes directly to the projects themselves.  And, unlike Global Ministries in the United Methodist Church, UMCOR does not receive apportionment funds to cover its administrative costs.  In order to keep this wonderful worldwide blessing going let us support their behind-the-scene efforts for UMCOR.

Prayer Time on Sundays from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary.  Anyone is welcome to join on any Sunday.  Here is a brief summary of Sunday Morning Prayer Time:  We usually start at the altar with a group prayer or meditation for 5 minutes or so, then head off to whatever spot we like around the sanctuary to pray by ourselves for the rest of the time.   There is a box of prayer booklets on the Prayer Corner table that can guide you, if you like.  There is usually some quiet, thoughtful music playing during the hour, and some people feel comfortable praying quietly out loud to themselves, or moving around the sanctuary.   The world needs prayer warriors, feel free to join us any Sunday.  Amen.

Let us learn together the rich blessings God has in store for us and all those that we love with God’s love.

Egg-citing News:

Join us for an Easter egg hunt on March 25th  (Palm Sunday) following church.  Children up to 6th grade are welcome to participate in this egg-citing event and adults are encouraged to “egg” them on!  All egg hunters will be awarded a sackful of goodies.  Please bring your own basket (we will have some bags on hand too).  We are accepting candy donations for goody bags; please place them on the shelf outside the church office.

MARCH 2018 MISSION FOCUS – UMCOR Administrative Costs

The last day to order is Sunday, March 25.

Amen.

There will be a prayer quilt in the sanctuary on Sunday for Beverly Bishop.  Please take time to say a prayer and tie a knot.  May the warmth of the quilt remind her that God’s loving presence is with her and that our caring prayers will continue.

MEMBERSHIP CLASS

FEBRUARY 2018 MISSION FOCUS – FREEDOM SCHOOL - THIS SUNDAY IS MISSION JAR SUNDAY!!

OUR FEBRUARY MISSION FOCUS is Freedom School.  A Freedom School is a six-week Monday through Friday reading and enrichment program developed by the Children’s Defense Fund in 1995.  This Program has a proven track record for increasing reading levels from 1.4 to 2.2 grade levels over two to three summers for children that participate in the Freedom School.  Freedom Schools were birthed as a vision to the end of what was known as the “cradle to prison pipeline.”  We know there is a direct correlation between third grade reading test scores and incarceration in adulthood for at-risk children in our urban areas. The Maumee Watershed District of the United Methodist Church is hosting a Freedom School at The Friendly Center in Toledo.   The school will start June 18th and conclude July 27th.  Our gift will be helping to provide funds to send one or more children to school.  The school hosts 50 children from K-12.  It costs $1000.00 to send one child.  The school also will need volunteers for mentoring.  There will be more details to come in the next few months.  Let’s try to better a child’s life with your contribution.

Amen.

Amen.

Operation Christmas Child

We are gathering OCC monthly donations for a packing party again this year when collection week rolls around in 2018.  This past November, we packed 67 shoeboxes to add our totals with this packing party!

February Collection Items:

~Watch for end of month sales on hats, gloves, and scarves~

Pray for shopping wisdom as you purchase these monthly items and the items for your own boxes for collection in November. The Lord knows the children who will receive your gifts and He can guide your shopping adventures to exactly what will meet needs and give joy.

These children may never receive another shoebox of gifts and love again. They deserve new items to open and cherish.

As you collect items for the year, please remember that boys ages 10 to 14 are painfully under represented.  Let’s see what we can do to change that this year.

Fellowship Ministry

We are in need of a volunteer to oversee the Fellowship Ministry.  This is an important time when we visit with guests, members, friends and family; share our concerns or a story over a cup of coffee, before we continue with our week.  This person would make sure there is food available and  make sure there are people signed up to make coffee, set out the treats, and clean up.  Maybe consider sharing this responsibility with a friend.  Please contact the Church office at 419-878-3645, if you are interested in serving in this ministry.

            Quilt Made by AW Kids!

Once again this year, the Anthony Wayne Spirit of Giving will be having their Annual Spaghetti dinner. The fundraiser is TODAY! Friday, February 16 at Anthony Wayne High School. Save the date and help students and staff of AWHS raise funds to support others in the district with catastrophic illnesses. The dinner is from 4:30-8:00 PM in the high school cafeteria.   Tickets are $5.00 each at the door.  Please help us take care of our Anthony Wayne Family.

The Upper Room for March-April 2018 is located on the table at the sanctuary entrance.

The February 2018 Better FAMILIES Pamphlet is available at both entrances.

PEANUT BUTTER JARS

Happy tails wagging saying “THANK YOU!” to all who have donated peanut butter jars for the Humane Society.  Please continue to place un-scraped jars in the basket on the shelf by the church office.

MEMBERSHIP CLASS

A new members class for adults wishing to know more about Waterville United Methodist Church and church membership will begin on Sunday morning February 25 at 9:00 am in the church basement. This will be a great time to meet other members of the church and to discover more about the ministry, mission, vision and discipleship of our congregation. This is a four-week experience. That will conclude on March 18. Please contact Pastor Mike at 419-469-0156 or pastormike@watervilleumc.org with any questions.

FEBRUARY 2018 MISSION FOCUS – FREEDOM SCHOOL

JANUARY 2018 MISSION FOCUS - The Pregnancy Center of Greater Toledo – This Sunday is MISSION JAR SUNDAY!

What We Do:  Save & Changes Lives.  Who We Are:  A Place for Answers.  A Place for Hope.

2016 at a Glance:  1,144 individuals served; 605 ultrasounds performed, 899 pregnancy tests administered, 114 people attended a parenting class, 90% of abortion vulnerable clients chose life after seeing their ultrasound.

Their goal is to lovingly share the truth about life, relationships and faith.  They help men and women make life-saving, life-changing decisions by sharing information about options, consequences and available services.  With the exception of a small amount of grant funding for abstinence education, all funds come from donations.  Over 40,000 women have already received help.  The Pregnancy Center continues to be a community outreach committed to expressing the compassion of Christ through support and education in pregnancy related issues.   We can help keep the doors open!  Mission envelopes are located in the pew racks for your financial gifts.

Sunday Worship Services A Few Changes for Security:

Following will be the changes on Sunday morning related to security to further protect our children and all attenders and to provide as safe a place as possible.

  *  At 10:40 am all exterior doors will be locked.

  *  Clear signage will be installed directing anyone arriving after 10:40 to the office and courtyard door near the offices as an usher will be posted there to let people in and assist with the elevator if needed.

  *   Training will be given to the ushers and others to understand what needs to be done if an intruder situation would occur.

  *  Watch for more information as this plan continues to unfold.

These are not big changes and many of us will not be impacted by them in any way at all. Let us remember the families of the Texas church shooting of recent weeks and continue to pray for each of them and the whole congregation. Also, to pray for all the churches that have been targeted by evil persons by mass shooting, bombs fires and vandalism.

2017 Giving Statements:  Your 2017 Giving Statements were emailed on Saturday, January 6th.   For those who receive hardcopies, they are available for your pick-up on the shelf outside the Church Office.  If you have any questions, please contact Tom Wiggins (419) 878-5503 or (financialsec@watervilleumc.org).

Would you like a DVD of the Children’s Program, “Finding Christmas Under the Sea?”  Sign up for your copy on the hallway bulletin board!

Altar Flowers Update from Melva Robinson, Chairman Altar Guild

WUMC has been very fortunate these many years to bring the creativity of our Lord into our presence at each worship service in a number of ways but especially with the flower arrangements on our altar.  These arrangements give us the opportunity to enjoy the flowers and along with the spoken word and music be reminded of who we are worshiping.  They also provide an occasion to honor and celebrate family, friends and our Lord.

I take this time to tell you Third Street Blooms in Waterville is the florist who prepares each order for our altar as requested.  The Sign Up sheet for flowers is on the bulletin board by the church office.  The cost of each arrangement will be increased to forty ($40.00) dollars beginning the first of 2018.  If you have ordered flowers recently you realize the cost.  Our florist has been very generous with the arrangements and delivery.  Please send your payment to the church and indicate altar flowers.

Don't forget you may take your arrangement home after the service.

      December 2017 MISSION FOCUS

IMPACT WITH HOPE – THIS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31 is MISSION JAR SUNDAY – Your change matters!

Impact with Hope is a local charity that has international influence.   You may know it as International Services of Hope which has been present on Farnsworth Road in Waterville since their incorporation in 1982.  (One of the original trustees was Fred Dieter, who was a member of this church before his passing.)  It is a community based, non-profit, charitable organization whose mandate is devoted to ensuring a brighter future for children.

Their mission is to reach out and serve others by mending broken bodies, bones, and hearts, feeding hungry families, responding to disasters, and investing in communities throughout the world.  More than $0.98 out of every $1.00 is spent directly on the people they serve.

They have been particularly busy this fall since the two recent hurricanes, Harvey & Irma, that devastated much of Puerto Rico and other islands.  As of October, they had already sent over ½ million meals to Puerto Rico, and had 3 forty-foot containers of supplies ready to go.  One of their most urgent needs is for the funds to aid in shipping.  Please give generously to our December Mission Focus!

This Wednesday, January 3 is the next Toledo SeaGate Food Bank.  Please meet at WUMC at 9:30 AM.

Would you like a DVD of the Children’s Program, “Finding Christmas Under the Sea?”  Sign up for your copy on the hallway bulletin board!

      2018 Stewardship Campaign:

If you haven’t had the opportunity to complete and return your 2018 Estimate of Giving Card or General Information & Service Opportunities form, we will gladly accept them at any time.  Communication is so important and these Information Sheets help us to make sure we have the correct contact information on file for you.  You may place them in the offering, send via US Mail or drop off at the church office.  Thank you!

      2018 Giving Envelopes:

Your 2018 Giving Envelopes will be available on the shelf outside the church office.  Please make every effort to pick them up, as it is quite expense to mail them.

      December 2017 MISSION FOCUS

IMPACT WITH HOPE – SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31 is MISSION JAR SUNDAY – Your change matters!

      Christmas Children's Program DVDs

Would you like a DVD of the Children’s Program, “Finding Christmas Under the Sea?”  Sign up for your copy on the hallway bulletin board!

      Fellowship Ministry

Are you making a New Year’s Resolution to be more involved in the Church?  Please prayerfully consider overseeing the Fellowship Ministry.  This is an important time when we visit with guests, members, friends and family; share our concerns or a laugh over a cup of coffee, before we continue with our Sunday and week.  We are in need of a volunteer to oversee the Fellowship Ministry.  This person would make sure there is food available and  make sure there are people signed up to make coffee, set out the treats, and clean up.  Maybe consider sharing this responsibility with a friend.  Please contact the Church office at 419-878-3645, if you are interested in serving in this ministry.

The Better Families Pamphlet is available at both entrances.  Consider giving it as a stocking stuffer!

The next Toledo SeaGate Food Bank is Wednesday, January 3.

      December 2017 MISSION FOCUS

      IMPACT WITH HOPE

Do you ever suffer from the, I don’t have enough syndrome? Not enough time, energy, friendships, family support, community, faith, peace, patience, money or all the things you can personally add to this list.

During the next 5 weeks we are going to study how God desires to provide for our every need. This is a part of our 2018 Stewardship focus. A basic question for the study is this; What would life be like if I believed, trusted and lived out of faith that God will provide for my every need? Ask yourself now, do I trust God to provide for all my needs?
